Vicki Gaia's Bio - Author of Modern Historical and Contemporary Fiction I picked up a pen and wrote my first story after I'd opened my art gallery. I didn't have time to create artwork so I wrote short stories instead. I had to create, and writing became my pursuit. A laptop was easy to cart around and take anywhere, anytime. To my surprise, a passion grew, and words replaced my paints. I've always been a 'nerd' (before the term was created) and have worn glasses since the age ten. I'm a computer geek, read graphic novels (favorites right now are Birds of Prey, Batman and Nightwing), watch Japanese anime, and play on my PS2. My iPod is my best friend when I need to blot out the world. I'd be at a loss if I couldn't check my email and surf the 'net'. Yet, even with all this technology I still love to read a good book. I'm from a family of readers. I love all genres of literature and non-fiction, and spend my small fortune at my local bookstores and Amazon. Amazon's buy now with one click button is dangerous! History is another passion. It's exciting to discover an interesting tidbit or strange event about the past. It's how a story begins to form in my mind. When I start a novel, I frequent my local library, the Internet, and search for old maps and diaries to give me insight into the age of my story's setting. When I moved from California to Arizona, our house had to be close to a library. My formative years came on the cusp of the Sixties generation, and influenced my way of perceiving life, politics and social issues. My female characters are free-spirited, fiercely independent, and live on the edge of what was considered sociably acceptable. Usually, it's my male characters in need of fixing. I love writing about relationships and how two people find a way to make it work regardless of their backgrounds. I've always been a sucker for romantic movies, and happy endings, and there's no better genre to write than romance.
